چکیده

Shape transformations of two-component vesicles in which the spontam .. 'Qus curvature depends on the local compositions in the two monolayer:s are invest igated theoretically. Even if the two components do not ellhibit la1l.'ral phase separation in spherical ve~icles, temperature-induced shape transformations cause lateral phase segregat ion. Vesiculation of sma ller buds is favored in the two-component system. In two-component vesicles with inll'rmonolayl'r phase separat ion. thermal budding is dominated by the different thermal ellpansion coefficie nts of the two monolayers.

Phase transitions and shapes of two component membranes and vesicles I: strong segregation limit

We investigate unilamellar membranes and vesicles composed of an A/B mixture of partially miscible amphiphiles. Assuming a simple bilinear coupling between relative composition and local curvature, and in the strong segregation limit of the A/B mixture, we show for unilamellar open-shape membranes that the competition between sudace tension and curvature results in a phase with a selected perio...

Spotted vesicles, striped micelles, and responsive Janus assemblies induced by ligand binding

Selective binding of multivalent ligands within a mixture of polyvalent amphiphiles provides, in principle, a simple mechanism for driving domain formation in self-assemblies. Divalent cations are shown here to crossbridge polyanionic amphiphiles, which thereby demix from neutral amphiphiles and form spots or rafts within vesicles as well as stripes within cylindrical micelles. Calcium- and cop...

Phase transitions and shapes of two component membranes and vesicles II : weak segregation limit

We investigate equilibrium Shapes of vesicles composed of a mixture of partially miscible amphiphiles embedded in twoand three-dimensional Space. The amphiphilic molecules can diffuse within the membrane and undergo an intramembrane phase separation below a critical temperature. We assume a simple phenomenological coupling between the local relative composition of the amphiphiles and the local ...

Phase diagrams for multi-component membrane vesicles: a coarse-grained modeling study.

We develop a multicomponent membrane coarse-grained model in which the effects of spontaneous curvature and fluidity are included. This model is used to perform computer simulations to study the phase segregation, domain coarsening, budding and budding off of multicomponent membrane vesicles. Three types of phase diagram are presented with variation of composition, spontaneous curvature, and li...
